Marketing advice written for national brands rarely fits a local business. If you’re a plumber in Williamstown or an electrician in Altona, you don’t need the whole country to find you. You need the people within a twenty-minute drive to find you first, trust you quickly and get hold of you easily.
Here is what consistently works for local Melbourne businesses, and what tends to be a waste of money.
1. Your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website
For “near me” searches, the map results sit above the ordinary website listings, and many customers never scroll past them. Your Google Business Profile is what appears there, so treat it as a second shopfront:
- Fill in every section, including services and service areas.
- Add real photos of your work, your van and your team. Skip the stock images.
- Keep hours accurate, especially around public holidays.
- Post an update or a recent job now and then so the profile looks alive.
2. Reviews are the new word of mouth
A steady flow of recent reviews does more than a high score from three years ago. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, good or bad. A calm, professional reply to a poor review often wins more trust than the review loses.
3. Be specific about where you work
“Servicing all of Melbourne” tells Google and customers very little. Naming the suburbs you actually cover works better, and so does content that proves you work there: a short write-up of a job in Newport, a page for your Altona service area, photos tagged with real locations. People in the west want someone local, not a call centre sending whoever is free.
4. Speed and mobile come first
Most local searches happen on a phone, often by someone with a problem they want fixed today. If your site takes too long to load or the phone number is hard to find, they go back and tap the next result. A simple site that loads fast, shows what you do and has a tap-to-call button at the top will beat a fancy one that doesn’t.
5. Respond faster than everyone else
Often the job goes to whoever replies first, not whoever is best. If you can’t answer the phone on site, set up a missed-call text or an enquiry form that sends you the details straight away, and call back the same day. Our post on AI automation for trades covers how to do this without hiring anyone.
What to stop spending on
- Directory listings that charge a monthly fee but send no calls. Ask for proof before renewing.
- Broad ads with no location targeting. Clicks from the other side of the city are money gone.
- Social media posting for its own sake. A few genuine job photos beat daily filler.
Putting it together
None of this is complicated, but it does need to be done consistently. Start with your Google Business Profile and reviews, tighten up your website on mobile, then make sure every enquiry gets a fast reply.
